The Fragmentation of Grief

Abstract

When most people think of grief- they probably think of what one feels after the death of a loved one. While this is a completely real and valid form, it is normally the only context the feelings of grief are associated with. Grief can be felt over many things, such as the loss of a job or who you were before a traumatic experience. This concept, known as disenfranchised grief, is one I decided to explore in my individual capstone. Using collage- an art form known for its use of different media and portrayal of complex issues, I will work to capture my own emotions around my grief over my loss of my original self. I hope that in portraying this I can help shed light on other forms of grief, and make others who may be struggling feel less alone.
